The Credulity of St. Thomas - Icon Reproduction

This image is derived from the post-Resurrection accounts in John’s Gospel (20:24–29). The traditional icon depicts the eleven apostles in the upper room, with the Risen Jesus appearing at the center as St. Thomas places his finger in His side. It is located on the festal tier of the Russian Orthodox iconostasis—the wall covered in icons that separates the sanctuary of a church from the congregation—in the series of feasts from the Easter season. The icon is noted for a certain delicacy not often seen in this otherwise restrained medium. Unlike in the West, which frames the incident negatively as “Doubting Thomas,” the traditional Eastern title is the more cumbersome The Faith of Thomas Strengthened or The Credulity of St. Thomas.
